Porn and Social Behaviour

The horny teenager, sitting in the basement, masturbating obsessively to online porn — it’s a monstrous image that is every parent’s nightmare. But how common is it? Like any other behavior that produces pleasure, porn can be addictive. This is because novelty and excitement — the cornerstones of porn (and also other addictive substances) — stimulate the brain, and in some people, leads to a desire for more. Although the actual stats on porn addiction are difficult to find, the moral panic around teens and porn viewership is everywhere, such as in this news story from 2009.

There does seem to be some links between increased porn viewership and social isolation or depression, but again, is it the porn that causes the depression, or do depressed teens seek out the fantasy world of pornography as an escape? More research on this area definitely needs to be conducted before we start blaming pornography for all of society’s problems.
